And yes, precisely -- the challenge here is how to have enough standards in our use of punctuation, such that the way we use it isn't utterly incomprehensible to each other, while having enough free play that we can do interesting and novel things.

It's a bit like the way magazines I write for have their own in-house style ... a sort of common voice that each individual writer becomes subsumed by a bit (to give the overall publication a sense of identity) but not entirely (such that the whole publication feels lively).
