Great piece! It's fascinating how audio-only content -- be it music, reporting, conversation, religious sermons, literature, or what have you -- reinvents itself with each new medium. First it was live-only; then radio; then recorded physical media; then digital files and streaming. But in each case, people find the basic act of listening to other humans compelling.

Speaking of the CBC, I visited them ten years ago or so to be interviewed when my first book came out, and I remember one of the older radio hosts laughing about how her 20something assistant listened to the CBC all day ... but had never used a physical radio. They listened purely online. "I don't think she knows what frequency it is on the dial," she told me.
