Yes indeed, speaking or reading a play out loud really transforms it, compared to merely reading it on the page. Back in my first year of college at the University Toronto, I took a class with Colin Visser, a drama teacher who said that the actual name for the course ought to be “how to read a play”. (The college authorities wouldn’t let them call it that, of course, because it sounded too mundane.) But the truth was, there’s a huge amount that goes into figuring out how the written play translates into the action on stage, and the first step is to read it aloud to yourself.

As for voice dictation, I just use the voice dictation it’s built right into iOS on the iPhone! Seems to work pretty well …
