It's a smart idea to avoid highways, even the small ones. They're truly not made for cyclists. Frankly even quiet country roads can be dangerous -- while we were stopped on the shoulder of a road on Wednesday, a car approached and was drifting off to the side towards us until it suddenly corrected course with only perhaps 20 feet to go. I wondered if maybe the driver was looking at their GPS or something and didn't expect to find anyone in the road!
