Interestingly, I also reminded me of the advice a daily journalist from the Toronto Star told me when he visited The Varsity, the campus paper at the University of Toronto, back when I was a student journalist in the 80s and early 90s. He was describing the inverted pyramid concept in newswriting, i.e., lead with the most important stuff so that if the reader stops reading after two paragraphs, they’ll already know the gist of the article. The way he described it is: When you’re writing the piece, imagine you’re trying to tell a friend what’s going on as they’re grabbing their keys and rushing to leave the house because they’re late for work; in that brief window where you only have their attention partially, what would you say?
