That’s a great story!

Mine has some similarities in my early years. I grew up in suburban Toronto in the 70s and 80s, where a car was pretty necessary for easy movement around — though we did have public transit not too far away. I rode my bike a ton as a kid, though; it was how you got around to see friends and do errands and have fun. In my 20s I kept on cycling to get around downtown Toronto when I moved down there; it was a pretty cycle-friendly city.

But I stopped riding when I moved to NYC in 1998 — things were too dangerous for cyclists back then!

The situation improved, though, with more bike lanes and enough cyclists that I felt safe again cycling by 2010. These days it’s my main mode of transportation!
